Chapter 9: Twisted Tails

Knowing that Quentin lied to me all day was hard. Have overreacted at times, but I do not regret it. Placing my trust in people is not easy for me…or for anyone in this profession. The most common-looking people, the most law-abiding citizens, commit the most heinous crimes. That makes a person paranoid. People say that authorities deserve praise. We put our lives on the line for them. But most of us swore to end crime. We were all victims of it, in one way or another. Some victims want everyone to feel that pain. Meanwhile, we make sure no one else does. Now, with Myles gone, there is no way to find him. I failed to prevent pain. But I will find him as soon as we get Laura out of that hole.

Deja vu struck at an inopportune moment.” says Quentin, watching Laura from the hole.

This hole was shallow, so we did not fret. Our excitement had waned.

I lay on my back near the hole. Quentin crouched over it. We reached out to Laura. She jumped a little to grab them. With more pull than we expected, we got her up.

She dusts off her dress, “I will be in the shower for a whole day now.” She says, not deeming it necessary to even thank us.

We headed outside, to the other side of the leaves. No one said it, but we all sighed with relief. We stretched our muscles. One thought filled our minds: finally, we got out of that mess.

It was not a long walk from the exit back to the town. By the time we entered, the sun had set, and everyone was planning to head home. The bars and cafes were filling up. It was a long-awaited weekend, like any other. People heading out had a joyful, whimsical walk, as if free from shackles. They had seen the night lights after ages. But we all knew this would not last. They must return to their repetitive lives once Monday dawned.

My house was on the outskirts, a bit outside the town center. It was easier for me. It was near my precinct. I did not like partying or socializing much. My home formed a sheltered sanctuary for me and Addie.

We got to the doorsteps of my place, and I opened the lock, which made a clicking sound I was so delighted to hear.

“Welcome! Please excuse the mess, I was not home for a while.” I joked.

Everyone came in, scanning the place. Their gazes shifted from the kitchen to the living room, then to the shelf above the TV. It held my medals and school plaques. I was not in the mood for entertainment or questions about myself. So, I went to the living room couch and let my body fall as soon as I was close enough. Addie went to his dog bed and did the same.

Quentin stood near the shelf, examining the awards.

“I did not know you swam.” He said, looking at a high school runner up trophy.
